Fair opportunity hiring (also known as fair chance hiring) is crucial for fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. It not only benefits the individuals directly involved but also strengthens communities, boosts the economy, and upholds the principles of justice and equality. By providing formerly incarcerated individuals with fair employment opportunities, we can help them rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.

Reducing Recidivism
Employment provides financial stability and a sense of purpose, which are critical factors in reducing recidivism. When formerly incarcerated individuals secure meaningful employment, they are less likely to return to criminal behavior. Jobs allow these individuals to use the skills they have learned during their incarceration, further encouraging them to stay on a positive path, therefore breaking the cycle of poverty and crime and reducing the stigma associated with incarceration.
Economic Benefits
By hiring formerly incarcerated individuals, businesses tap into a largely underutilized talent pool, which can help address labor shortages and diversify the workforce. Also, employed individuals contribute to the economy through taxes, reducing the financial burden on public resources.
Reducing Discrimination
Adopting fair opportunity hiring practices helps businesses comply with laws and regulations designed to protect the rights of formerly incarcerated individuals. By adopting these practices, businesses can reduce discrimination in the hiring process and allow individuals to be judged based on qualifications rather than their past. There is an ethical imperative to offer second chances and support individuals who have served their time and are working to reintegrate into society.
Personal Development
Employment provides opportunities for skill development and career advancement, enabling formerly incarcerated individuals to achieve personal and professional growth. Because these individuals have gone through Breakthrough’s in-facility program, they have practiced work ethic, self-esteem, and confidence which empowers them to strive for further successes in their future endeavors.
